The Shys young career has been marked with impressive accomplishments and great strides of artistic growth. Their success has come in many different forms over the four years of being a band and perhaps what is most notable is that its always been on their own terms. It seems The Shys eclectic blend of classic and modern rock/pop music has caught the attention of not only a loyal and passionate fan base but some of modern music and the art worlds most interesting and respected artists.
The news of this group of five 20-something year olds from Southern California began to spread rapidly in 2005 with rumors of the bands highly captivating live performances and an EP “The Gun Shys EP” (AERONAUT RECORDS) full of catchy sing-a-long guitar pop and rock n roll that quickly set them apart from the others. Sold out shows in Los Angeles and all over Southern CA followed and the band recorded and released their debut album "Astoria" (SIRE RECORDS) in the summer of 2006. An album that saw the band touring and playing festivals all over North America and the UK for the better part of the two years that followed. Hollywood came calling when the bands lead single "Call In The Cavalry" was featured in the popular HBO series "Entourage", MTV as well as the films "Adventureland" "Promnight" and "Drilbit Taylor". Meanwhile the press proclaimed the album a critical success and the band continued to impress audiences of new fans.
After arriving home from touring most of 2006/2007 The Shys began work on their second album and decided to build their own studio in the sleepy beach town of San Clemente CA that they all call home. A musical sanctuary of sorts that would ultimately lead to the release of their self produced sophomore album “You'll Never Understand This Band The Way That I Do" (AERONAUT RECORDS). The album was proclaimed a musical winner by the press and fans alike. The musical progression saw the band digging deeper into a rich heritage of Soul, Blues, and Americana music as opposed to the debut albums Seventies New York punk inspired sound. In the face of an uncertain and declining music industry The Shys continued to push forward throughout 2008 building their fan base producing music videos and touring North America in support of their Sophomore LP into the New Year.
The Shys began their 2009 by being asked to join Nikolai Fraiture (The Strokes) new project Nickel Eye on a tour of sold out shows along the West Coast. This would be the 3rd time around being asked to support members of The Strokes side projects, with highly coveted support slots for Albert Hammond Jr. and Little Joy already under their belt. The news of this cool Southern Californian rock band began to ring in the ears of even more interesting characters. Next to come calling was Pixies front man and Alternative rock legend Frank Black for The Shys to support his new band in California. Perhaps the most unexpected fans came in the form of one of modern music biggest bands when The Shys were asked to be support friend and singer songwriter Ryan Pardey (Halloween Town) for two sold old arena shows with The Killers in San Diego and their native Las Vegas. The band happily obliged and it became increasingly apparent that The Shys music could transcend genres and please the ears of everyone from the casual pop music fan to the most selective of independent music followers.
It was time for new music and on the heels of a highly successful SXSW visit that saw the band playing seven of the Austin TX music festival’s shows in just 3 days the band returned home to their studio in Southern California to begin production on a new EP. The band employed forward thinking Brooklyn producer Paul Mahjan (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV On The Radio, The National, Liars, etc) and engineer Mark Rains (BRMC) to help blend their eclectic mix of classic and modern rock and pop music into six new songs that is the bands greatest musical effort thus far. The EP boasts infectious hooks and a modern take on a rich musical heritage of traditional and classical influences that bridge the gap from the old to new. With the new EP set for an early 2009 release and a grass roots fan base continuing to grow we can be sure that The Shys are one of those unique and rare Rock n' Roll bands that is worth your time, a band that is building a career on a foundation of an uncompromising integrity and a relentless belief in giving the people their moneys worth.
